Abid Ali optimistic about Pakistan’s chances of saving the game

Breaking it down to small targets in terms of spending time at the crease and keeping the England bowlers at bay served Abid Ali well, as his patient knock ensured the game went into the final day and boosted Pakistan’s chances of securing a draw. Abid faced as many as 162 deliveries for his 42, and built watchful partnership’s with Shan Masood and Azhar Ali, as Pakistan went into Stumps on Day 4 at 100 for 2.
Having added 49 for the opening wicket with Masood, which came in 23.4 overs, Abid put on 39 with Azhar as he stayed at the crease for nearly 50 overs. Speaking at the end of the day’s play, Abid said his target was to bat the entire day, which he came pretty close to before a reverse-swinging delivery made him James Anderson’s 599th wicket.
“It was my last innings, and I was trying to give my best. I was trying to play according to the team’s requirement, build a partnership. As an opener, it is my job to see off the new ball and spend as much time as possible at the crease. I was successful with that. My target was to be at the crease for the entire day, and I broke it down into little targets – taking it by the hour. The weather also was with us but I was playing with a positive mindset. It wasn’t much about the score but doing what’s best as per the team’s requirement,” said Abid.
